There has been alot of hate spewed out in the aftermath of California’s passage of proposition 8. Many pointed the finger at African Americans who voted for Obama AND Prop 8. Racist rhetoric has also been spewed at some anti-prop 8 rallies in the aftermath. This prompted a open and thought provoking discussion with two local friends about the subject of sexism, homophobia and racism. This is a politically charged discussion that is likely to offend and inform.

I’m still alive and kicking (I think??). I have stayed busy with job hunting, my radio and TV work. Lately I have also been doing some paid canvassing to help some local progressive measures pass. I eventually plan on doing a podcast about the election and update all of you on everything that is happening. Man charged with kidnapping
neighbor’s children

Posted: 7:33 PM- A man is accused of kidnapping two neighbor children as they slept in their South Salt Lake home on the Fourth of July.
In charges filed Tuesday, police wrote that the 2-year-old girl and 4-year-old boy were sleeping with several other children early Friday morning in the living room of their home near 400 East Maxwell Lane. The parents of the children were outside the home but regularly checked on the children, police wrote.
About 6:30 a.m., one of the adults noticed the 2-year-old girl was missing. She heard children crying from inside a nearby home and found the child, along with the 4-year-old in the bedroom of the neighbor’s home.
The man who lived there admitted he brought the children to his home, police said. None of the adults at the children’s home had given him permission to take the children or even to be inside their home, police wrote.
The man, 30, is charged with two counts of child kidnapping, a first-degree felony, and one count of burglary, a second-degree felony.
The only reason this story hit my radar is because of an email that I happened to run across while I was on My Piece-of-Space (I guess it’s good for something). What we often forget is there are two sides to every story. It looks like the Salt Lake Tribune only told one side.

You need to know the truth about something that has happened to two of my friends.
On July 5th my friends Lola and Dan were the victims of a hate crime. Right here in Salt Lake City! The Salt Lake Trib did a cursory blurb on it today…and it should come as no surprise that they didn’t bother to report the truth!
Lola and Dan were at a party at their next door neighbors home on the night of the fourth. The party had been going on for quite some time and the grown-ups had gotten quite drunk. Lola noticed that the kids were starting to get very tired and had started crying. So, Lola offered her house (which was next door) as a place where they could fall asleep and then the parents could come and get them when the party was over…or they had sobered up. So, the kids were taken next door and put to sleep ON THE COUCH (not in somebody’s bed as the Trib reports). The party kept on going.
After a while the mother of the children had apparently fallen asleep. When she woke up…she had supposedly forgotten that she had left the children at Lola’s house. So she said to the men “They have my kids!” or something to that effect. The men (large men of polynesian decent) went next door and beat the door off it’s hinges. The then entered the house and, grabbing pots and pans, proceeded to beat Lola and Dan to a bloody pulp. All the time screaming at them “f*ing faggots” and like phrases. When the cops arrived…they charged Lola with kidnapping and she is now sitting in jail with no money to post bail! Dan is going in to the hospital again today for reconstructive surgery!

On the surface, this could appear to some as a “he said/she said” story, but every visibly queer person knows that something like this could happen to them just by simply being in the wrong place at the wrong time. Sara also sent me the latest updates on this story.

I just wanted you all to know everything that I know about the current situation. Hopefully you all got my initial email regarding this matter…if not then please reply to me for more details.
Anyway, as it stands, Lola (DJ) is still in the Salt Lake County Metro Jail! Her bail has been set at around $100,000.00!!! I found out that NOT ONE of her assailants was even questioned the night of her arrest. Dan is still undergoing facial reconstruction surgery. They have a lawyer, his name is Roger Craft, and the ACLU is involved (although to what extent I’m unsure). Ted McDonough is interested in heading up a story for us (he works for the City Weekly) and hopefully there will at some time come involvement from the other media houses here in SLC.
I hope everyone understands the seriousness of this situation! I know that you all would like to help out in anyway that you can…so here is the plan.
Lola has her hearing on Tuesday July 22nd (yeah I think they may have been trying to sneak that one in before we could get mobilized) at the Matheson Court House. It is at 2 p.m.! We are ALL planning on being there! Let’s fill the Court House and spill out onto the streets! Please forward this email to as many people as you know and tell them to do the same. We CANNOT let this go the slippery slope into oblivion. A great injustice has been committed and it MUST be righted. Please join with me in showing support to Lola and her boyfriend.
Now, IF Lola is not released at that hearing and she is still in prison on the 24th of July (Thursday), I plan on leading a march to the front door of the Metro County Jail and once there I plan on setting up a good old fashioned sit in. We will hope to keep a presence there (exchanging places so that everyone can still attend work and their various obligations) 24/7 until Lola is set free! Since I don’t want to march to the police station with five or ten of us…PLEASE everyone email me back a reply telling me if you can make it…and how many you can bring with you.
Also, I am thinking that when we show up at the Court House on Tuesday that everyone should plan on wearing something that is pink in color (this will represent the pink triangle rather well don’t you think) and anyone who has been a victim of discrimination or abuse from authorities should wear a red shirt!

Barack Obama has finally clinched the democratic nomination. While it’s time to heal the wounds and unite, I have little compassion for sore Clinton supporters who say they are going to vote for McCain. Considering how different Clinton and McCain’s positions are, the only way to explain this insanity is racism.
Falling asleep seems to be my biggest challenge. I just can’t shut my brain off unless my body is so tired that it forces it to. I want to know how you fall asleep. Maybe it’s through listening to this podcast? Hmmmm….
